Local riders led the way in the Tour of California’s “Race of Truth” for amateur cyclists this morning in Solvang as four Santa Barbara County men finished in the top five spots.
In a time that will likely beat that of some pro riders on the same course, Gary Douville of Santa Barbara finished the 15-mile course through the Santa Ynez Valley in 33 minutes, 47 seconds.
He was followed by Brian Cook of Santa Barbara (34:47), Brent Kay of Temecula (36:14), Matt Benko of Santa Barbara (36:29) and Jeff Nichols of Los Olivos (36:42).
The field of 28 amateur riders included 14 locals — 10 from the Santa Ynez Valley and four from Santa Barbara. Each donated $1,000 for Solvang’s Local Organizing Committee, which raises money to defray local expenses for hosting the Stage 6 time trial of the eight-stage race, which began Saturday in Sacramento and will finish Sunday in Escondido.

Duct Tape
Here's a tech tip:
Keep a strip of duct tape with you during training rides. It works great for booting a tire. I wrap a tire lever with about 6 inches of tape. It's strong, light, and handy.

Sprint Practice Sat Feb. 7th
We will resume Sprint Practice on Sat Feb 7th.
Here are the details on the second Saturday Sprint Practice;
Same format as the first.
Sprints are at moderate speed- concentrating on
sprint form, positioning, tactics and safety.
The objective is to practice under safe and controlled
conditions sensitize riders to the subtleties of all out
race finish sprints.
The number one rule covered on Sat. again will be;
1.Do Nothing' As in do nothing different than just pedal like a fool
in a straight line as fast as you can!
Do nothing' Means DO NOT try to get out of the way-
2. Uniform Behavior: A new second rule for this practice is Uniform behavior.
Once again safety a main concern and we will define uniform behavior as
everyone being on the same page at the same time- understanding that the
objective during this practice is for everyone to sprint to the line
in a safe and predictable manner.
